Principal Secretary for Internal Security Dr. Raymond Omollo has issued a stern warning to football fans ahead of Thursday’s CHAN 2024 matches, urging them to behave or risk jeopardising Kenya’s chances of hosting future continental tournaments.
Speaking following a security breach during Sunday’s high-stakes match between Harambee Stars and DR Congo at the Moi Sports Centre, Kasarani, Omollo emphasised that Kenya’s reputation is on the line. Fans had overpowered security personnel and forced entry into the stadium, raising alarm over safety and crowd control measures.
“While it’s a proud moment to host CHAN, our conduct as fans has serious national implications,” Omollo said. “Such actions damage our reputation, international standing and our ability to host future tournaments.”
The 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, kicked off on August 2, 2025. Kenya hopes to leverage its successful hosting of the tournament as a stepping stone to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Omollo underlined that CAF has imposed strict conditions around crowd behaviour, safety, and security. Any breaches inside or outside stadiums could result in penalties, including Kenya being disqualified from future bids.
“CHAN is our audition for hosting AFCON 2027,” he said. “Every match is an opportunity to prove we can host Africa’s biggest football event.”
The government has invested significantly in infrastructure and stadium upgrades. However, Omollo warned that such efforts will be futile if fans do not uphold order and discipline during matches.
“Our stadium upgrades mean little if our fans do not cooperate with security and stewards on the ground,” he said.
Fans are being urged to buy tickets early, arrive on time, follow security instructions, and avoid disorderly behaviour such as jumping barriers or vandalism.
“The whole world is watching,” Omollo stressed. “Let’s represent ourselves well and support the Harambee Stars with pride and responsibility.”
With international observers and CAF officials monitoring every detail, Kenya’s ability to manage CHAN successfully could determine its AFCON 2027 fate both on and off the pitch.
