Mugithi star Samuel Muchoki, popularly known as Samidoh, has officially resigned from the National Police Service (NPS) after 12 years of balancing law enforcement duties with a thriving music career. His resignation was confirmed by Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome Kanja, who said the officer-turned-musician is now “free to pursue whatever he wishes.”
Samidoh’s resignation, effective July 20, 2025, brings an end to a turbulent chapter in his police career. In his statement, he cited personal reasons, specifically the desire to focus fully on his music. The decision follows months of tension with his employers, which culminated in desertion charges and suspension of his salary.
In June, the NPS ordered Samidoh’s arrest, alleging he had deserted duty after failing to report to his new post at the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) in Gilgil on May 27. According to an internal report, he had been granted off-duty but failed to return, remaining absent for more than ten days. During that period, Samidoh was believed to be on a U.S. music tour without formal clearance, where he performed at various events, including the Ngemi Cia Ruraya concert in Seattle attended by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
His redeployment to the ASTU was widely interpreted as a disciplinary measure, marking the latest strain in his relationship with the service. The controversy deepened political undertones, with his association with Gachagua and participation in chants critical of President William Ruto raising speculation that his troubles were partly politically influenced.
On July 25, the High Court intervened by granting him anticipatory bail of Ksh200,000, shielding him from arrest but requiring him to surrender his passport. The move effectively set the stage for his resignation.
With his exit now formalized, Samidoh joins the growing list of Kenyan celebrities who have chosen to focus fully on their art. His departure from the uniformed service clears the way for an uninterrupted music career, where he remains one of the country’s most influential Mugithi artists with a loyal fan base both locally and abroad.
