Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has urged opposition leaders to urgently reconcile their differences and unite behind a single presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
Speaking during an interview on Radio Maisha on Thursday morning, Babu emphasized that only a united opposition can defeat the Kenya Kwanza administration, cautioning leaders against internal wrangles that could weaken their chances.
“Even the opposition can win it, but they should stop small disagreements. They should unite and produce one candidate. Without unity, it won’t be easy for the opposition,” Babu said.
The youthful MP called on key opposition figures Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, Eugene Wamalwa, and Fred Matiang’i to hold talks and agree on a common strategy. According to him, dialogue and cooperation are the only ways to avoid another divided election.
Babu, who has been vocal about issues affecting the opposition, dismissed the idea of supporting the broad-based government, saying there was “no viable reason” to back it.
During the same interview, Babu took a swipe at President William Ruto, accusing him of betraying Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua by allegedly orchestrating moves to impeach him. He compared Gachagua’s situation to his own experiences within the ODM party.
“Gachagua is a person who was oppressed by the government, just like I was oppressed by the ODM party. He was betrayed by Ruto,” Babu alleged.
His remarks came a day after he clarified that his recent appearance at Kalonzo Musyoka’s event did not mean he had defected from ODM to the Wiper Party.
Speaking on Radio Citizen, Babu stated that his friendship with Kalonzo was personal and should not be politicized. He also reiterated his belief that Kalonzo was the best-suited leader to challenge President Ruto in 2027, citing his experience and resilience in past coalitions with Raila Odinga and the late Mwai Kibaki.
