In a landmark move toward environmental sustainability and regional cooperation, the Governors of Embu, Meru, and Tharaka Nithi counties have agreed to jointly establish a regional waste recycling and processing plant. The partnership, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed at Tharaka Nithi County Headquarters in Kathwana, marks a major milestone in efforts to modernize waste management in the Mt. Kenya East region.
The initiative aims to transform how waste is handled by converting it into reusable materials and clean energy. This aligns with Kenya’s national agenda for sustainable waste management and supports global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on climate action, clean energy, and responsible consumption.
Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire described the collaboration as a bold step toward building a circular economy rooted in innovation and environmental stewardship. She emphasized that the partnership would not only address waste management challenges but also create economic opportunities for local communities through green jobs and renewable energy projects.
Meru Governor Mutuma M’Ethinkia echoed the same sentiments, highlighting the importance of collective responsibility in tackling environmental issues that cut across county boundaries. He noted that through shared efforts, the three counties could promote cleaner ecosystems and empower young people to participate in sustainable economic ventures.
Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki applauded the agreement as a practical demonstration of devolution delivering tangible benefits to citizens. He stated that turning waste into valuable resources would help reduce pollution, improve public health, and spur innovation in environmental conservation.
The regional waste recycling plant will serve as a hub for sustainable waste management, significantly reducing landfill use while enhancing recycling capacity. Embu County will coordinate the project, with Meru and Tharaka Nithi providing technical and logistical support.
The three counties have pledged to engage communities, attract investment, and harness new technologies to ensure the project’s success. Through this united effort, Mt. Kenya East is set to become a model for sustainable development and environmental transformation in Kenya.
