Uganda is set to establish a modern organic fertilizer factory in Kampiringisa following the signing of a $180 million investment deal. The landmark project is designed to boost agricultural productivity and strengthen the country’s drive toward sustainable farming practices.
The factory will sit on 133 acres of land allocated in Kampiringisa and is expected to be completed within 18 months. Once operational, it will produce up to 250,000 metric tons of organic fertilizer annually, primarily from cow dung and mineral resources. An offtake arrangement has been put in place to guarantee market access, ensuring that the fertilizer produced in Uganda is directly supplied to farmers.
The initiative comes as part of national efforts to improve food security, enhance soil fertility, and reduce the country’s reliance on imported fertilizers. Agricultural experts have long emphasized the importance of soil health, quality inputs, irrigation, mechanization, and modern livestock genetics as critical factors in raising productivity. The fertilizer factory aligns with these goals by addressing the urgent need for accessible and affordable organic fertilizer.
The project is also expected to create significant opportunities for local communities, especially farmers in Uganda’s cattle corridor. By supplying cow dung to the factory, farmers will gain an additional source of income, while also contributing to a circular and environmentally friendly agricultural model. Beyond supporting farmers, the investment is projected to generate employment during the construction phase and provide permanent jobs once the facility begins operations.
The establishment of this plant mirrors similar successes in neighboring countries, where organic fertilizer production has already proven vital in supporting agricultural transformation. With regional examples of factories operating at large scale, Uganda aims to replicate and adapt these models to suit its own agricultural needs.
Government institutions will provide the necessary policy and infrastructure support to ensure the project’s success. Plans are already underway to sensitize farmers on the benefits of organic fertilizer, highlighting its role in improving soil fertility, crop yields, and overall resilience against climate challenges.
The Kampiringisa organic fertilizer factory is positioned to become a cornerstone in Uganda’s agricultural sector. By promoting sustainable practices, reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers, and ensuring reliable supply, the project is set to transform farming livelihoods and contribute to long-term food security.
