Fifteen bright and deserving students from Kajiado North subcounty have been awarded full secondary school scholarships by the Rotary Club of Ngong Hills (RCNH). The awards were presented during a colourful ceremony held at Embul-bul Secondary School, one of the institutions partnering with RCNH in the life-changing initiative.
RCNH, a group of goodwill individuals dedicated to sustainable and lasting societal change, has partnered with three local schools—Oloolua, Embul-bul, and Kerarapon secondary schools—to provide educational opportunities to gifted students from underprivileged backgrounds.
Speaking at the event, Killian Nyambu, Director of Membership at RCNH, emphasized the importance of education in shaping the next generation. “The best way to support the future generation is by ensuring they access education for a better future tomorrow,” he said.
More than 1,000 students applied for the scholarship, but only 15 were selected following a rigorous vetting process. According to Lilian Ngina, the immediate former president of RCNH, the beneficiaries were chosen based on academic merit, financial need, and their potential to make a positive impact in their communities.
The scholarship covers students currently in Form 2 and will support them through to Form 4. Irene Wachira, RCNH’s Education Director, stressed the importance of discipline and good academic performance as conditions for maintaining the scholarship. Beneficiaries are required to present their report forms each term to monitor progress.
Jesinta Mukei, a former scholarship recipient from 2020 to 2023, shared her gratitude, saying, “It is more than just financial help. The support gave me peace of mind to focus on my studies.”
Jane Muremi, Director of Education in Kajiado North, lauded RCNH’s commitment, noting that such programmes not only uplift individual students but also strengthen the entire community.
In addition to scholarships, RCNH runs several community initiatives including tree planting, career counselling, mentorship, and book donations. The club is appealing for more partners and donors to expand the reach of the scholarship programme and continue supporting education as a catalyst for change.
