Basic Education Principal Secretary (PS) Julius Bitok has confirmed that 3,000 public schools have received their third-term capitation funds after their enrolment data was verified.
Speaking at Machakos Teachers Training College, where the verification exercise is underway, Bitok assured schools that the disbursement will continue progressively.
“So far, 3,000 schools have been able to receive capitation after being verified to have the correct data on the number of students in schools,” he said.
Verification for Accountability
The Ministry of Education directed all public schools to submit updated enrolment figures before receiving funds. Nearly all of Kenya’s 32,000 schools have complied, with education officials working extended hours to complete the checks.
Bitok defended the process, saying it was necessary to safeguard public resources.
“We had no option but to verify the data to ensure that every shilling reaches the correct school and the right learner. This is about accountability to the Kenyan child and to the nation,” he explained.
Schools at Different Compliance Levels
According to the PS, secondary schools are leading in compliance, followed by junior schools. Primary schools are slightly behind, mainly due to internet and technology challenges.
Bitok gave the example of Masi Boys High School in Machakos County, which has already received its full allocation.
“I am very pleased that when we visited Masi, the principal confirmed that the funds had been credited to the school account and that operations will now run smoothly,” he said.
Deadline Extended
To allow schools more time, the ministry has extended the submission deadline to Friday, September 12, 2025. However, Bitok cautioned principals and county supervisors that failure to submit accurate data in the required format would attract severe penalties.
He added that by the end of next week, all 32,000 schools are expected to have received their funds, ensuring smooth learning activities across the country.
