Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba has appointed Professor Chacha Nyaigotti-Chacha as the new Chairperson of the University of Nairobi (UoN) Council, marking a significant reshuffle in university governance across Kenya. The appointments were announced in a gazette notice dated July 25, 2025.
Prof Chacha, a seasoned educationist and former Commission for University Education chair, will serve a three-year term alongside newly appointed council members Dr John Kakonge, Samuel Njuguna Kimani, Dr Jonathan Ltipalei Lodompui, and Mary Amuyunzu. His appointment follows the recent exoneration of former council chair Prof Amukowa Anangwe and others from a KSh 32.4 million corruption case that was dropped by the Director of Public Prosecutions under Section 87(a) of the Criminal Procedure Code.
In the same notice, Ogamba made sweeping changes to councils of other public universities. At Kenyatta University, Joash Mokamba Keraita and Isaac Opuya Litali were named to the council, with Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Bashir Yusuf and Alice Waruguru Muita reappointed.
Egerton University now has Prof James Sang as its new chair, joined by Mohamed Ahmed Mohamed and Amos Okello. Kisii University saw the reappointment of Josephat Kipsoy Sawe and the inclusion of Dr Pamela Awuor Ochieng, Rev Prof Peter Mageto, and Dr Mwenda Makathimo.
At the University of Eldoret, Dr Peter Onchari Kereri was reappointed, joined by Evelyne Timpiyan Legis and Razoah Vitisia. University of Embu named Prof P.M. Kutima as Chairperson, with Christine Guchu joining the council.
New council members were also named for Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Garissa, and Mama Ngina University College, as well as Nyandarua and Bomet University Colleges. Notably, Prof Josephat Kipkoech Yego was appointed chair of the Koitaleel Samoei University College Council.
Appointments to Moi, Laikipia, Rongo, and Karatina universities, among others, were also made. All appointees will serve for three years, effective July 25, 2025, reflecting the government’s renewed commitment to strengthening governance in higher education institutions.
