The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) has begun laying the groundwork for the introduction of the Senior School syllabus under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). Speaking during an alumni event at Murang’a High School, KICD Chairman Prof Simon Gicharu confirmed that the institute has evaluated and approved textbooks for Grade 10, which will be distributed to all public Senior Schools across the country by the end of 2025.
The rollout marks a critical phase in CBC implementation, with the pioneer CBC cohort currently in Grade 9 set to transition to Senior School (Grade 10) in 2026. According to Prof Gicharu, Senior School will span three years, targeting learners aged 15 to 18. This stage will conclude the Basic Education cycle as outlined in the Basic Education Act, 2013.
Prof Gicharu emphasized the collaborative nature of the preparation process, noting that KICD will work closely with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and the Ministry of Education. “We shall partner with TSC and the Ministry in the induction of Senior School teachers during August and September 2025 to ensure readiness,” he said. Additionally, a national stakeholder sensitization drive targeting parents, school boards, and teacher unions is scheduled for July and August.
Under the CBC structure, KICD handles curriculum development, TSC is responsible for Competency-Based Teaching and Learning (CBT/L), KNEC manages Competency-Based Assessment (CBA), and the Ministry of Education ensures the provision of necessary resources.
At Senior School, learners will take a minimum of seven subjects, with four being compulsory: English, Kiswahili, Mathematics, and Physical Education. Mathematics will be offered in two streams — Core Mathematics for STEM pathway learners and Essential Mathematics for those in the Arts and Sports or Social Sciences pathways.
Prof Gicharu, an alumnus of Murang’a High School and founder of Mount Kenya and Mount Kigali Universities, urged students to take charge of their future. “The future of this country and the world lies in your hands,” he said, inspiring learners during the school’s alumni breakfast and mentoring event held on June 14.
