Residents of Kimilili were on Friday treated to a rare and symbolic gesture when their Member of Parliament, Didmus Barasa, arrived at Daraja Mungu Primary School in full school uniform to commission new classrooms.
Barasa, who is often seen in tailored suits and his trademark red fez-style hat, surprised many by stepping onto the school grounds in a white shirt, brown shorts, black tie, and barefoot. The unusual appearance was part of the commissioning of eight modern classrooms at the institution.
In photos shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, the MP explained that the decision to dress like a pupil was more than just theatrics. “Wearing the school uniform at Daraja Mungu Primary during the commissioning of 8 modern classrooms was more than just a gesture; it was an awakening,” he wrote.
According to Barasa, donning the uniform took him back to the humble beginnings of many Kenyan children, reminding him of the resilience and determination required to pursue education under challenging circumstances.
“In that uniform, I felt the silent struggles, the burning dreams, and the unbreakable resilience of our learners,” he stated.
The legislator emphasized that the new classrooms are not simply structures but symbols of hope, dignity, and a brighter future for children in the constituency. “Investing in modern, dignified classrooms is not about buildings, but about hope, dignity, and the future of our children,” Barasa added.
His move sparked discussions both locally and online, with many lauding his creativity in highlighting the struggles faced by learners, while others viewed it as political theatrics.
Nonetheless, the commissioning of the classrooms marked a significant milestone for Daraja Mungu Primary School, which now has improved facilities to enhance learning for pupils in Kimilili.
