A driving instructor from the Coast region has issued a public apology after a video of him shouting and hurling insults at his students went viral on social media.
In the video clips widely shared on Instagram and TikTok, the instructor, identified as Swaleh, could be heard scolding his learners during a driving session. The footage sparked outrage among Kenyans, with many questioning the professionalism of some instructors in driving schools.
Speaking after the incident, Swaleh admitted that his conduct was inappropriate and apologised to the affected learner, the driving school, and the public. He explained that he had been under immense pressure, handling up to seven students at once and conducting multiple sessions within six hours.
“I have asked for forgiveness not only to him (the student), but also to the company and everybody who has watched the videos,” Swaleh said.
He added that he had personally sought out the student who filmed and shared the video. According to Swaleh, the learner told him that the post was meant to be humorous and not malicious, but it quickly spiralled out of control once it went viral.
Despite the controversy, Swaleh maintained that he loves his job and believes that strictness is necessary to produce disciplined and competent drivers.
“Instructors must be serious, not easy on learners, because they will play with you and fail their NTSA tests,” he stated.
The driving school has since suspended Swaleh pending further review of the incident. Meanwhile, the viral video continues to spark conversations about the need for emotional intelligence and professionalism among driving instructors in Kenya.
