Kenya’s former middle-distance athlete and retired Kenyatta University lecturer, Prof. Mike Kipsugut Boit, has taken his former driver, Kevin Kipruto Lagat, to court for allegedly siphoning Ksh 1.4 million from his various bank accounts.
While testifying before Eldoret Chief Magistrate Dennis Mikoyan, the 76-year-old professor of Exercise and Sports Science recounted how Lagat, who had gained his trust over time, allegedly accessed his mobile banking details and drained funds from his KCB accounts in Eldoret and Kapsabet between December 2023 and January 2025.
Boit told the court that he had once allowed his driver to conduct a mobile money transaction using his phone under his supervision. Unbeknownst to him, Lagat reportedly memorized his M-Pesa PIN, waiting for the right opportunity to withdraw the funds.
According to Boit’s testimony, Lagat used the SIM card of a person who died 15 years ago to fraudulently transfer money from his accounts. The alleged transactions included Ksh 550,304 siphoned from Boit’s Eldoret KCB account and Ksh 480,000 from his Nandi Hills branch account.
Boit said he realized the fraudulent activity after noticing unusual bank notifications and reported the matter to Naiberi Police Station in Ainabkoi Sub-county, where he recorded an official statement.
The accused, represented by Lawyer Tecla Tum, faces charges of unlawfully accessing and transferring money from Boit’s accounts, contrary to Kenya’s cybercrime and financial fraud laws.
The case, which underscores the growing threat of mobile banking fraud, has been adjourned to January 26, 2026, for further hearing at the Eldoret Law Courts.
