Dr. Nancy Macharia, the outgoing Chief Executive Officer of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), has declined her nomination to serve as Chairperson of the Murang’a County Public Service Board. The appointment had been proposed by Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata, but Dr. Macharia formally turned it down in a letter dated June 25, 2025, citing a new opportunity with an international organization.
In her letter addressed to Governor Kang’ata, Dr. Macharia expressed her appreciation for the nomination but noted that she had received another offer from an international body that would potentially interfere with her ability to fully serve in the county role. “I hereby thank you for nominating me for the Chair of the Murang’a County Public Service Board. However, I decline the post as I have received another offer from an international body, which, in my opinion, could affect my performance in the said role,” she stated.
She further clarified that she had initially hoped the county role would be part-time, but came to understand that the position demands full-time engagement—something she cannot commit to at this point.
Dr. Macharia was expected to be vetted for the position on Friday, just days before her official exit from TSC on June 30, 2025, marking the end of a notable tenure in Kenya’s education sector leadership.
Governor Kang’ata had nominated Dr. Macharia alongside several other professionals for the county’s Public Service Board. These included Dr. Louis Mwende Musikali, Johnson Kang’ethe Kinyua, and Dr. Brian Lishenga Makamu as members, while Oscar Kimani Gathura was proposed as Secretary to the Board.
Dr. Macharia’s decision not to take up the role introduces a key vacancy in the leadership of Murang’a’s civil service oversight at a critical time, as the county continues with efforts to streamline its public service operations.
Her exit from the TSC and the subsequent turn-down of the county role signal a possible transition to a more global platform, where she is expected to continue contributing to educational or public administration reforms at an international level.
