The government has ordered all boarding schools in Gatundu South, Kiambu County, to close indefinitely. This follows a wave of arson attacks that destroyed several dormitories and put students’ safety at risk.
Four Schools Hit in One Week
Within just seven days, at least four institutions were affected. Dormitories and learning facilities were set ablaze, raising fears of a coordinated plan targeting schools. Parents and education stakeholders called for urgent action to protect learners.
Government Steps In
Confirming the closure, Gatundu South Member of Parliament Gabriel Kagombe said the decision was reached after consultations with security agencies and education officials. He explained that shutting down schools would create room for investigations.
“We have had many challenges in Gatundu, and we reached a consensus to close all the schools to reset and investigate. Intelligence leads have pointed to a social media web where students use computer labs to spread information on how to torch schools,” Kagombe stated.
Social Media Links to Fires
Authorities believe some students have been using online platforms to share tips on how to start fires. Investigators are now working to establish who is behind the incidents.
Kagombe added that the closure was timed over the weekend. He noted that weekends pose a higher risk because fewer teachers are present to supervise learners.
“We took the decision over the weekend because we realised students can take advantage of the reduced supervision,” he remarked.
Next Steps
The closure is expected to give investigators time to track those responsible for the arson attacks. Education stakeholders will also use the break to put in place stronger security measures and strategies to prevent similar cases in the future.
Parents have supported the move, saying it was necessary to protect children. However, they have urged the government to go further and address the root causes of student unrest.
