The government has announced the acquisition of 14 acres of land for the expansion of the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Makueni Campus in Wote. The development was confirmed in a notice published in the Kenya Gazette on August 22, where the National Land Commission (NLC) reserved and vested the management of land parcel L.R. No. 33890 to the institution.
The parcel, measuring 5.916 hectares, is situated in Wote Township, Makueni County. According to the gazette notice, the land will henceforth be managed by the KMTC campus under strict conditions. Chief among them is that the land must exclusively be used for medical training purposes and related services.
The college has also been directed not to transfer or lease out the land without prior written consent from the NLC. Within 180 days of the announcement, the institution is required to prepare and submit a comprehensive development and management plan for the land to the commission. Failure to comply will result in the revocation of the management orders.
Additionally, the campus will be responsible for paying all assessments levied by the county government, safeguarding the land, and maintaining its boundaries. The institution will also be expected to coordinate smoothly with other public agencies to ensure efficient use of the reserved property.
The expansion is expected to bolster training capacity at the campus, which currently enrolls slightly over 400 students. With additional land, the campus anticipates accommodating more learners in future intakes.
Established in 2014, the KMTC Makueni Campus is located in Wote town, approximately 72 kilometers from both Machakos City and Makindu town along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway. It is among the 71 KMTC campuses spread across Kenya that collectively produce about 85 percent of the country’s healthcare workforce. The campus is under the leadership of Principal Gabriel K. Manyara.
The land acquisition marks a significant step towards strengthening healthcare training in the region, with the government keen on addressing the increasing demand for skilled health workers across the country.
