Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) has announced the resumption of academic activities following the end of a five-day closure caused by industrial action by university staff unions.
In a notice issued by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Prof. Robert Kinyua, the university directed all students to report back on Friday, November 7, 2025, with classes officially resuming on Monday, November 10, 2025.
“Following the calling off of the industrial action by the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) and the Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU), all students are hereby requested to report back to the University on Friday, 7th November 2025. Please note that classes will resume on Monday, 10th November, 2025,” Prof. Kinyua stated.
JKUAT expressed gratitude to students for their patience and understanding during the disruption, which began after the university suspended academic operations on November 1, 2025. The temporary suspension followed a special meeting of the university Senate held on October 30, which resolved to close the institution due to the ongoing strike.
The industrial action, organized by UASU and KUSU, was part of a nationwide standoff between university staff and the government over salary arrears, delayed promotions, and the implementation of collective bargaining agreements (CBAs).
During the closure, students were instructed to vacate university premises by 4:00 p.m. on November 2, except for those in essential academic programs such as medical students on clinical rotations, postgraduate researchers, and students enrolled in JKUAT’s TVET Institute, Mombasa Campus, Nakuru Campus, and the School of Open, Distance and eLearning (SODeL).
With the industrial action officially called off on Wednesday, normal operations are set to resume. The university management assured the community that measures are in place to ensure a smooth continuation of the academic calendar.
