Police in Nakuru County are investigating a tragic incident where a Form Four student sitting for her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams was found dead in what is suspected to be a case of suicide.
The 17-year-old female candidate from Shunem Secondary School in the Lanet area was discovered on Sunday night, November 10, 2025. According to police reports, the student had been revising for the Mathematics Paper scheduled for Monday when she excused herself from the classroom and went to the dormitory.
When she failed to return after a long period, the teacher overseeing the evening preps raised concern and requested other students to help search for her. Moments later, screams filled the school compound after the student’s body was found hanging from a classroom truss with a piece of cloth tied around her neck.
Police officers responding to the distress call confirmed that a note, believed to be a suicide note, was recovered from her locker. The note was reportedly addressed to her parents and is currently under examination to verify its authenticity. The body was taken to the mortuary for an autopsy as investigations continue.
The student’s parents were notified of the incident and were said to be devastated by the news. Authorities noted that the case was among four suspected suicides reported in different parts of the country over the weekend.
Recent data indicates that suicide cases have been on the rise in Kenya, with the World Health Organization citing causes such as academic pressure, joblessness, depression, and family-related stress. The government has reiterated its commitment to tackling mental health issues through awareness programs and counseling services in schools and communities.
In a separate incident in Nyamira County, police are investigating the murder of a 23-year-old boda boda rider, Reagan Nyamongo, who was killed and robbed of his motorcycle in Matutu, Borabu.
