Kenya and China have unveiled a landmark initiative to strengthen technical and vocational education through the launch of the China-Kenya Craftsman Academy at the Technical University of Kenya (TUK). The academy, launched as part of broader Kenya-China cooperation, aims to equip youth with globally competitive, market-driven skills essential for industrial growth and innovation.
Speaking during the launch, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba praised the initiative as a significant step in enhancing education ties between the two nations. “This launch is a continuation of a fruitful partnership that has not only advanced capacity-building but also provided our students with international exposure and access to modern technologies,” he stated.
The new academy is closely aligned with Kenya’s ongoing reforms in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). Principal Secretary Esther Muoria noted that the country has rolled out 194 modular curricula, adopted dual training models, and established partnerships with over 2,500 industries. “This collaboration will further enable Kenyan youth to acquire skills that meet global standards,” she added.
Wang Lixia, chairperson of the People’s Government of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, emphasized the academy’s role in furthering China’s Belt and Road Initiative through vocational cooperation. She described the launch as both a milestone and a new beginning for bilateral collaboration in skills development.
Prof. Benedict Mutua, Vice Chancellor of TUK, hailed the academy as a symbol of innovation and practical learning. “This facility is more than just infrastructure. It is a beacon of partnership and applied training that aligns education with the needs of modern industry,” he said.
Wang Junwei, Party Secretary of Inner Mongolia Technical College of Mechanics and Electronics, highlighted that the 16-year collaboration has yielded significant results, including Africa’s largest eCNC Streaming Centre and the development of over 400 bilingual teaching resources.
The Craftsman Academy is envisioned as a regional centre of excellence in equipment manufacturing, renewable energy, and industry-academic integration. It will also serve as a hub for cultural exchange and cross-border knowledge sharing, fostering inclusive economic development and preparing Africa’s youth for a rapidly evolving global job market.
