Five top-performing Kenyan university students have returned from the prestigious Huawei ‘Seeds for the Future’ 2025 program, held from July 21 to 25, 2025. The immersive initiative, which brings together bright minds from across the globe, is aimed at cultivating ICT talent while fostering cross-cultural understanding.
Representing Kenya were Shem Machii Ngunjiri (Dedan Kimathi University of Technology), Sophy Cherono Rop (United States International University–Africa), Huldah Mwihaki Kaura (JKUAT), Mungai Erick Gachuhi (Moi University), and Samuel Ochor Ogeno (University of Nairobi). They joined peers from countries including Brazil, Namibia, Portugal, Côte d’Ivoire, and Madagascar for an intensive week of learning and networking.
The program offered advanced ICT training sessions in cutting-edge technologies such as 5G, Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, and Smart City solutions. Students toured Huawei’s Exhibition Halls, visited the Smart Government Showcase in Longgang, and explored global drone manufacturer DJI’s headquarters, gaining firsthand insights into frontier tech innovations.
During the closing ceremony, participants were awarded certificates of completion. In a moving speech, Samuel Ochor likened the experience to a seed’s growth, stating: “A seed starts in the dark, buried in the soil… but with time and care, it becomes something impactful.” Huldah Mwihaki echoed his sentiments, noting the program’s unique combination of technical learning and cultural immersion.
Michael Kamau, Huawei’s ICT Academy Manager, lauded the Kenyan students, saying, “These bright minds represent the future of Kenya’s digital landscape. Through programs like this, we’re preparing them to lead Africa’s tech-driven growth.”
Launched in 2008, Huawei’s ‘Seeds for the Future’ is a flagship Corporate Social Responsibility initiative focused on building local ICT capacity, encouraging knowledge exchange, and promoting interest in digital careers. Kenya has been an active participant since 2014, with many alumni playing key roles in the country’s digital transformation.
The 2025 edition once again highlighted the transformative power of combining technology, education, and cultural exchangeplanting the seeds of a more connected and innovative future for all.
