The government has suspended a school feeding programme in 17 schools in Ganze, Kilifi County.
This comes after viral videos showed pupils being forced to recite Hindu prayers before receiving meals.
Commissioner Confirms Suspension
Kilifi County Commissioner Josephat Kibiwott confirmed the suspension. He said the decision followed a review of the clips and discussions with the County Education Team.
“We have stopped that children’s foundation from supplying food to our schools because we saw it as unfit,” Kibiwott said. “If you want to help people, help in a good way, not by forcing pupils to do what is not right for them.”
The feeding programme has been running in Ganze since 2019. However, officials noted that the prayer requirement was only introduced this term.
Kibiwott revealed that in August, teachers from 16 primary schools and one secondary school were called to a meeting in Mombasa. It was during this meeting that the new rules were introduced.
Viral Videos Spark Outrage
The videos, filmed in Ganze, showed groups of pupils being led to perform Hindu prayers before meals.
Some clips captured head teachers guiding students. Others showed learners following instructions in small groups away from classrooms.
The footage spread quickly on social media, sparking public criticism and calls for accountability.
Authorities also seized religious materials found in the schools as part of an ongoing investigation.
Worries Over Learners’ Welfare
The move to suspend the programme has raised concern in Ganze. The area often suffers from drought, and many pupils rely on school meals as their main source of food.
Kibiwott assured parents and the public that alternative arrangements are being explored. The government, he said, will ensure pupils continue to receive meals as investigations continue.
