A pharmacy student at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Menza Campus has touched the hearts of many by donating Sh10,000 to support a struggling colleague.
Rashid Abdi, who is currently undertaking his Final Qualifying Exams, stepped up to assist fellow pharmacy student Iddah Akoth, who has been facing financial difficulties. Akoth, an orphan, has been struggling to make ends meet, prompting Abdi to extend a helping hand.
“I thought of doing something for one of my comrades who is an orphan and has really been having a hard time,” said Abdi. “My parents always encouraged us to give. Religion, too, reminds us of the power of supporting others.”
The donation was made in the presence of Campus Principal Winfred Nguih and the Deputy Director of Academics, Nyamira Mwangi, both of whom commended Abdi for his selfless and timely gesture. Abdi’s act of kindness, they noted, was an inspiration not only to students but also to staff and the broader KMTC community.
Abdi emphasized that giving is not new to him and pledged to continue supporting Akoth. He revealed that he has already reached out to friends and is organizing a major fundraiser to assist Akoth and other needy students.
His philanthropic action came just a day before the official launch of a fundraising campaign by KMTC alumni, set for June 27, 2025, aimed at raising additional funds for needy students. The initiative is part of broader efforts by KMTC to cushion financially struggling learners, especially amid delays in disbursement from the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).
HELB recently allocated Sh500 million to KMTC to support students across its campuses. In addition, the institution has established a central fund where individuals, organizations, and well-wishers can contribute towards student support initiatives.
Abdi’s compassionate move serves as a timely reminder of the power of individual action and the impact of solidarity among students, especially during challenging times.
