The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has announced a new round of training for teachers and teacher educators, focusing on competency-based assessment (CBA) development and standard setting. In a statement published in MyGov on Tuesday, KNEC CEO Dr. David Njengere urged eligible individuals to submit their applications online by Friday, April 11, 2025.
The training initiative is part of KNEC’s broader effort to enhance assessment standards and ensure effective evaluation of learner competencies under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). “The Council wishes to invite qualified teachers and teacher educators to apply for training in the development of quality test items for effective implementation of Competency Based Assessment in Basic Education and teacher training levels,” Njengere said.
Participants who complete the training will be considered for future engagements with KNEC as contracted professionals. However, those who have previously undergone similar training with the Council are advised not to apply.
To qualify, applicants must demonstrate professional integrity, subject-matter expertise, and currently teach the subjects or learning areas they wish to be trained in. Targeted applicants include those teaching:
- Primary School Grades 4, 5, and 6
- Junior School Grades 7 and 8
- Senior School teachers preparing for Grade 10 learners in 2026
- Teacher Training Colleges under DTE-PP&P, DSTE, or Stage-Based Pathway levels (Foundation, Intermediate, or Prevocational)
Additional requirements include a minimum of three years of teaching experience, registration with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), and a recommendation from the head of the institution. Applicants must also hold relevant academic and professional qualifications and be familiar with the CBC curriculum designs for their area of specialization.
Interested teachers and educators can apply through the KNEC examiners portal at http://examinersapp.knec.ac.ke. Further details and eligibility criteria are available on the official KNEC website, www.knec.ac.ke.
This initiative underscores KNEC’s commitment to building teacher capacity in alignment with the goals of the CBC, ensuring that learners receive assessments that reflect their skills and competencies effectively.
