Kenyatta University (KU) and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) have officially announced the dates for the resumption of classes following the conclusion of a 49-day lecturers’ strike that had paralysed learning across public universities.
In a statement issued by the Academic Registrar, Bernard Kivunge, Kenyatta University confirmed that all academic activities for the First Semester of the 2025/2026 academic year will resume on Monday, November 10, 2025. He urged all students to report on time to avoid missing out on lectures and other scheduled activities.
“Following the calling off of the industrial action by members of staff in the University on 6th November 2025, all activities for the First Semester are expected to resume immediately,” Kivunge stated.
At JKUAT, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Prof. Robert Kinyua, issued a similar directive, urging students to report back to campus on Friday, November 7, 2025, ahead of class resumption on November 10.
“Following the calling off of the industrial action by the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) and the Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU), all students are hereby requested to report back to the University on Friday, 7th November 2025,” read the notice.
The announcement came after the University and Allied Staff Union (UASU) and the Inter-Public Universities Councils’ Consultative Forum (IPUCCF) signed a Return-to-Work Formula (RTWF), effectively ending the strike that had disrupted learning for nearly two months.
UASU called off the strike on November 5, after the government committed to clearing salary arrears owed under the 2017–2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
UASU Secretary General Constantine Wasonga hailed the agreement, urging the government to honour its promise.
“If you honour what we have signed here today, I want to commit that there shall be no strike called by UASU up to 2030,” said Wasonga.
With the industrial action now resolved, normal academic operations are set to resume across all public universities.
