The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has unveiled a new upgrade programme targeting teachers with P1 or Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) certificates, allowing them to advance to the Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE).
The initiative seeks to strengthen the implementation of the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) by ensuring teachers, especially at the lower levels of learning, are fully equipped with modern pedagogical skills. KUCCPS Chief Executive Officer Dr. Agnes Mercy Wahome said the programme would help close the gap in the supply of well-prepared teachers.
“The upgrade programme will ensure that there are no shortages of teachers who are well prepared to deliver the Competency Based Curriculum, especially at the lower levels of learning,” Dr. Wahome noted.
Eligible applicants must be registered with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and can select their preferred Teacher Training College (TTC) for the training. The programme is designed to be flexible, with options to start this month or during the November–December school holidays.
Online applications for the upgrade programme opened on August 6 and will run continuously with short breaks for processing. The first deadline is set for August 20.
Alongside the teacher upgrade scheme, KUCCPS has also reopened applications for the September 2025 intake into Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions. This window will be open from August 8 to August 22.
In a bid to attract more applicants, KUCCPS has slashed the application fee for TVET courses from KSh 1,500 to KSh 500. The agency hopes the reduced cost will encourage more Kenyans, especially young people, to take up technical and vocational training as a pathway to skills development and employment.
Applications for both the teacher upgrade programme and TVET placements must be submitted through KUCCPS’s online portals.
The twin initiatives underscore KUCCPS’s efforts to address skills gaps in both the education and technical sectors, in line with Kenya’s long-term human capital development goals.
