The construction of Lessesia Secondary School in Taveta Constituency, Taita Taveta County, is progressing steadily, with the project now 70 percent complete. The final major phase roofing is set to begin soon, signaling the imminent completion of this landmark institution.
Launched by President William Ruto in December 2024, the school is part of the government’s broader efforts to improve access to quality senior school education across the country. Once completed, the three-storey, state-of-the-art institution will be a model facility under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
The expansive complex will feature 20 spacious classrooms, four modern science laboratories, two well-equipped libraries, a staffroom, administrative offices for the principal and deputy principal, and high-standard ablution blocks. The infrastructure has been carefully designed to foster a supportive and conducive learning environment for students and teachers alike.
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, speaking during a recent inspection, emphasized the significance of the school in the national CBC rollout. “As a pure senior school, Lessesia Secondary is set to admit its first cohort of Grade 10 learners next year, in line with the national transition to the Competency-Based Curriculum at senior school level,” he said.
The new institution is expected to ease the burden on the limited number of senior schools in Taveta and its surroundings. Currently, many learners are forced to travel long distances or relocate in search of secondary education opportunities, a challenge that Lessesia Secondary seeks to eliminate.
By increasing access to quality education closer to home, the school will not only reduce congestion in existing schools but also improve retention and transition rates, key goals of Kenya’s education sector reforms.
As the nation gears up for full CBC implementation at the senior school level, Lessesia Secondary stands as a beacon of progress and a testament to the government’s commitment to inclusive and equitable education. The school is on track to open its doors to learners in early 2026.
