Learning at Masii Boys High School in Mwala, Machakos County, was disrupted on Friday. A section of students was sent home following unrest.
The school administration released Form Two, Three, and Four students. This followed repeated incidents that worried teachers and local authorities.
Alleged Dormitory Fire Attempts
Sources say some students tried to set a dormitory on fire multiple times this week. The attempts, at least three, failed. The school acted quickly to prevent danger.
Mwala Deputy County Commissioner David Tegutwa confirmed the disruption. He said the boys demanded to go home.
“Yes, learning has been interrupted at Masii Boys High School. I’m told the boys demanded to be released to go home for ‘half term’,” he said.
He questioned the timing of the unrest. “What could make the students suddenly not ready to learn barely three weeks into the term?”
The students have been sent home for an unspecified period. Investigations are ongoing. Education officials are expected to give guidance on the next steps.
Fire at Mbooni Boys High
Just hours after the Masii Boys incident, a fire broke out at Mbooni Boys High School in Makueni County. The fire completely destroyed a dormitory. Some students lost their sleeping quarters.
Personal items like bedding, clothing, and metal boxes were destroyed. Firefighters from Makueni County and Kenya Red Cross personnel quickly responded. They contained the fire and helped in rescue operations.
Thankfully, no casualties were reported.
Safety Concerns
These incidents highlight the need for better safety measures in schools. Authorities are monitoring both cases closely. Prompt intervention is crucial to prevent further disruptions and protect students.
