Matayos MP Geoffrey Odanga has called on school heads to refrain from sending students home over unpaid fees and instead engage parents directly to find amicable solutions. Speaking during the disbursement of a Sh67 million bursary fund at St Mary’s Burumba Secondary School, Odanga emphasized that the burden of paying school fees lies with parents, not students.
“It is painful to see students sent home daily to collect fees. Parents who are struggling financially should visit schools and discuss payment plans with teachers,” he said.
Odanga revealed that bursary allocations had been increased, with each student now receiving Sh5,000, up from Sh4,000. In total, 5,131 students attending schools within the sub-county benefitted to the tune of Sh25.6 million. An additional Sh2 million went to 200 students in special needs institutions, while 4,000 tertiary learners received Sh20 million.
The MP firmly opposed proposals to transfer the management of the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) to county governments, arguing it would hinder support for needy students.
“County governments have not effectively used their funds. The national government remains more reliable in implementing education programs,” Odanga asserted.
He also expressed concern over the frequent transfers of teachers within the sub-county, urging the Teachers Service Commission to stop the trend. “Teachers need time to bond with learners and communities. Constant reshuffles every one or two years are counterproductive,” he said.
Odanga further directed school heads to release certificates of students who have completed their education, stressing the importance of complying with government directives.
On matters beyond academics, the MP urged parents to take a more active role in instilling discipline and moral values in their children. He decried rising cases of drug abuse and child trafficking in the county, calling on communities to remain vigilant.
“Let us guide our children. We must all stay alert and help stop the growing threat of child trafficking,” he urged.
The lawmaker reaffirmed his commitment to improving education standards and protecting children in Matayos constituency.
