Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has added new international accolades to his name after receiving an Honorary Doctorate in Leadership and Governance from the American University of Peace and Governance (AUPG, USA). The honour was presented in recognition of his contributions to sustainable development, humanitarian work, and social initiatives.
The award ceremony took place on Friday, September 26, at the House of Lords, British Parliament in London, during the 3rd Edition of the UNIPGC Global Leadership Investment Summit and Peace Awards (GLISPA). The event was organized by the UK Chapter of the United International Peace and Governance Council (UNIPGC).
In addition to the doctorate, Sonko received the Leadership Excellence Award from the UNIPGC Supreme Council, as well as recognition from the Jewel Howard Taylor Leadership Program, led by the former Vice President of Liberia.
Sharing the news, Sonko said:
“True leadership is not measured by titles or positions, but by the impact we make on humanity. Leadership without compassion is incomplete. Throughout my years in public service, I have sought to go beyond policies and politics to touch lives in tangible ways.”
Sonko was also among the keynote speakers at the summit, where leaders from across the world gathered to discuss peace, governance, and sustainable development.
The UNIPGC Council annually honours global leaders, organizations, and institutions for their role in promoting peace, leadership, and social transformation. Their awards range from Leadership Excellence to the prestigious Grand Commander of Peace title.
For Sonko, these recognitions highlight his efforts in human capital development, community service, and social work. The awards add to his growing profile as a leader recognized beyond Kenyan borders for initiatives that extend past politics into humanitarian impact.
