Mount Kenya University (MKU) recently hosted the Alumni 4K’s Reunion, a vibrant gathering that brought together graduates, students, and partners under the theme “Rekindling Bonds and Sailing Together.” The event celebrated shared memories while setting new directions for growth, collaboration, and global impact.
The reunion was graced by MKU leadership, including Vice-Chancellor Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi, who described it as more than a celebration—“a renewal of friendships and a reaffirmation that MKU is a lifelong family.” He likened alumni connections to sails on a boat: strong individually but capable of propelling forward only when united.
Prof. Jaganyi also highlighted the MKU Alumni Awards, which honor graduates excelling in leadership, public service, innovation, entrepreneurship, and global impact. He urged alumni to continue nominating outstanding achievers and to actively support initiatives such as scholarships, internships, mentorship, and research.
On the Alumni Tracer Study, a key initiative to align academic programs with industry demands, he stressed that alumni feedback is vital in ensuring MKU graduates remain competitive in the job market. Quoting MKU Founder and Chairman Prof. Simon Gicharu, he inspired attendees: “If you encounter a wall, climb over, break through, or go around it.”
Other speakers reinforced this vision. Prof. Wanderi, Principal Corporate Services and Linkages, encouraged alumni to reconnect with their schools to shape curriculum and support student mentorship. Mrs. Virginia Musawa, Director of Alumni Relations, emphasized building bridges across generations, noting that every alumnus is a vital link in MKU’s growth.
Keynote Speaker Ms. Dorcas Owinoh brought the theme to life by sharing her journey from teaching herself to code to founding LakeHub in Kisumu, an innovation hub that has trained over 5,000 youth and supported hundreds of entrepreneurs. She also launched Zone01 Kisumu, a tuition-free software engineering program that recently attracted over 13,000 applicants.
The reunion not only rekindled bonds but also showcased MKU’s commitment to shaping innovators and leaders who continue to make a global mark.
