Mount Kenya University (MKU) has celebrated a historic milestone, graduating 8,724 students during its 27th graduation ceremony, held at the institution’s Pavilion Grounds in Thika town. The event also marked the 4th graduation ceremony for Equip Africa Institute, MKU’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA)-accredited arm.
Of the total graduands, 8,638 were from MKU and 86 from Equip Africa Institute. The qualifications awarded included 10 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees, 691 Master’s, 150 Postgraduate Diplomas, 5,447 Bachelor’s Degrees, 1,965 Diplomas, and 461 Certificates. This represents significant growth compared to the 7,448 students who graduated in December 2024.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi lauded the graduands for their dedication, revealing that MKU’s student enrolment had reached an all-time high of 60,223 for MKU and 1,762 for Equip Africa Institute in the May-August period. “These statistics represent the highest student enrolment that the University has ever achieved,” he noted.
The ceremony, themed Catalyzing Innovation: Universities as Drivers of Artificial Intelligence (AI), was graced by MKU Chancellor Prof. John Struthers, who conveyed greetings from the University of the West of Scotland, the Glasgow community, and his family. He commended the graduands, parents, faculty, and management, describing the institution’s growth as “steady and remarkable” during his seven-year tenure as Chancellor.
Prof. Struthers highlighted MKU’s new global partnerships, particularly its appointment as the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) Sustainable Development Goal 9 Hub Chair on Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure for 2024–2027. This prestigious role, he noted, has elevated MKU’s global profile, with the university represented at the Global Higher Education Symposium at the UN Headquarters in New York in July 2025.
He emphasized that such achievements affirm MKU’s vision of being a leading institution driving innovation and societal transformation. The Chancellor also applauded the university’s ongoing contributions to local and global development agendas, particularly in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
With its record-breaking graduation numbers and expanding partnerships, MKU continues to position itself as a key player in higher education, both in Kenya and on the global stage.
