Mount Kenya University (MKU) held its inaugural physical alumni reunion in the North Rift region, bringing together former students under the theme “Together Again: Honouring the Past, Building the Future.” The event, hosted at MKU’s Eldoret Campus, marked a significant milestone in fostering alumni engagement and mentorship for current students.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi lauded the gathering as a new chapter for the MKU alumni community, describing it as a transition from a strong informal network to a formally connected and future-focused movement. “You are champions of your fields, of change, and of the values MKU holds dear integrity, excellence, teamwork, and innovation,” he told the attendees.
Prof. Jaganyi revealed that the university has set aside Ksh 5 million to establish a new alumni award to honour an outstanding graduate making a significant community impact. The award will be presented in December 2025. He encouraged alumni to give back by mentoring students, providing internships, and supporting scholarships and university development.
Dr. Emily Kirwok, Director of MKU Eldoret Campus and Chair of the Champions Cluster, emphasized the need for alumni to reflect, reconnect, and empower students through mentorship and job opportunities. “As an institution that once mentored you, we now turn to you our proud alumni to do the same for the next generation,” she said.
Keynote speaker Ms. Mercy Wanjiru, a graduate of MKU’s MBA and BBM programmes and current Regional Coordinator of the Kenya Private Schools Association (North Rift), celebrated the reunion as “a coming home.” She praised MKU for instilling courage and ambition in its students and committed to supporting mentorship programmes and student placement.
Virginia Musawa, Director of Alumni Relations, thanked the alumni for sustaining the MKU spirit, reminding them that MKU is more than an institution it is a lifelong community. She underscored the importance of building a robust Kitale–Eldoret alumni network to foster collaboration and societal impact.
The reunion, also attended by university leaders and dignitaries including representatives from Uasin Gishu County, highlighted the vital role alumni play as brand ambassadors and changemakers, reinforcing MKU’s mission to educate, connect, and inspire.
