Mount Kenya University (MKU) has taken a giant leap in technological education with the launch of its Robotics, AI, Data Science & Immersive Technologies Lab and the unveiling of the Walker E Educational Humanoid Robot. The facility, the first of its kind in the region, aims to transform practical learning in high-demand fields such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning, and Data Science.
Speaking at the launch, MKU Chairman and Founder, Prof Simon Gicharu, emphasized that the humanoid robot will offer students hands-on experience, allowing them to program, train, and test new algorithms on a fully functional machine. The initiative also includes innovation grants to support research projects addressing real-world challenges.
“Our commitment is to equip students with modern, industry-relevant technology that enables learning, innovation, and the creation of practical solutions. The Walker E Educational Humanoid Robot will provide a unique hands-on experience within our AI Robotics Lab,” Prof Gicharu stated.
The new lab is complemented by upgraded equipment in the School of Engineering, Energy, and the Built Environment, enabling practical experiments in solar and wind energy technologies. This ensures students are well-prepared for careers in the rapidly growing sustainable energy sector.
In addition, MKU unveiled a Phantom Head Skills Laboratory to enhance dental training, further strengthening the university’s focus on modern, practical education.
Prof Gicharu also highlighted plans to establish a dedicated innovation grant to fund outstanding AI projects, allowing students to transform their ideas into real prototypes through the MKU Incubation and Innovation Hub. He encouraged students to actively participate in hackathons, noting that such competitions enhance problem-solving skills and prepare learners for real-world innovation challenges.
The Robotics and AI Lab is set to support robotics training, AI research, human–robot interaction studies, and student-led prototyping and product development, marking a new era for MKU and the region in technology-driven education.
