Moi University is set to conduct a public auction of livestock and a vehicle, with members of the public invited to view the animals and other items starting Friday, June 20 until Monday, June 23. The auction itself will take place on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at the university’s farmyard located at the Main Campus in Kesses, Uasin Gishu County.
In a notice signed by Vice Chancellor Prof. Kiplagat Kotut, the university announced that it will be disposing of a range of animals including cows, donkeys, dogs, pigs, and a Toyota Hilux vehicle. The move is aimed at streamlining university operations and reducing the cost of maintaining non-core assets.
Among the livestock to be auctioned are bulls and bull calves priced between Ksh. 50,000 and Ksh. 70,000 each. Donkeys are valued at Ksh. 9,000 to Ksh. 15,000, while pigs will go for Ksh. 3,500 to Ksh. 7,000 each depending on size and breed. Also featured in the sale are German Shepherd dogs, each priced at approximately Ksh. 40,000, drawing interest from potential buyers in the security and breeding sectors.
The highlight of the auction for vehicle enthusiasts and farmers alike is a Toyota Hilux pickup truck, which the university has valued at Ksh. 350,000. The vehicle is expected to attract significant attention due to its reliability and versatility.
The Vice Chancellor emphasized that all interested members of the public are welcome to inspect the items during the four-day viewing period before the auction day. The auction will be conducted openly to ensure transparency and fair access for all participants.
The disposal initiative is part of the university’s wider asset management strategy to optimize resource utilization. With budgetary constraints and a need to refocus on academic priorities, institutions like Moi University are increasingly turning to auctions as a practical way to divest surplus assets.
Potential buyers are urged to adhere to all university guidelines during the viewing and auction processes. Payments will be made on-site, and successful bidders are expected to collect their purchases within the stipulated time.
