A fire on Thursday evening destroyed part of a dormitory at Mumbuni Girls Secondary School in Machakos. Police are investigating the cause of the incident, which left property worth an unknown value reduced to ashes.
How the Fire Started
The blaze broke out at around 6:30 p.m. on the second floor of a two-storey dormitory. The dorm houses all the school’s female students. Several beds, mattresses, blankets, and personal belongings were burned.
Firefighters from Machakos County responded quickly and contained the fire before it spread through the building. Police officers also arrived at the scene to calm anxious parents and neighbours, who attempted to enter the compound to help.
No Lives Lost
Deputy County Commissioner David Rotich confirmed that no students were injured. However, a few girls went into shock and were rushed to Machakos Level 5 Hospital. They were treated and later returned to school.
Education officials, including County TSC Director Jimal Ahmed and County Director of Education Margaret Mwirigi, visited the school. They declined to comment, saying investigations were ongoing.
Parents React
Parents who rushed to the school expressed relief after confirming their children’s safety.
Faith Mathei, whose sister studies at the school, said she was thankful that no lives were lost. “I was relieved to see that all students were safe,” she said.
Another parent, Edna Ndunge, explained that she assisted some girls who had fainted during the incident. She helped rush them to hospital.
Alfred Nguyo, who also has a sister at the school, confirmed that three girls had suffered shock but were later stabilized.
Investigations Ongoing
Police are still probing the cause of the fire. Mumbuni Girls Secondary School is located about two kilometres from Machakos town.
