olice have arrested a University of Nairobi student accused of fatally stabbing his roommate during a heated altercation at the Kikuyu Campus hostels.
The dispute, which reportedly began as an argument over who should clean the shared bathroom, turned deadly on Monday night when tensions escalated. Witnesses said friends of the victim intervened, prompting the suspect to grab a knife.
The victim, a third-year student, sustained multiple stab wounds and was rushed to PCEA Kikuyu Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
Confirming the incident, Omondi Ogola, a Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officer in Kikuyu, said detectives had taken over the matter.
“We received a report from the university’s security personnel that one student had stabbed another. The injured student was rushed to hospital, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries,” Ogola stated.
He added that the suspected murder weapon had been recovered and the suspect taken into custody. “We suspect death was caused by a stab injury. Investigations are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the attack,” he said.
Police, working with the community, tracked down and arrested the suspect shortly after the incident. He is currently being held at Kikuyu Police Station. On Tuesday, he was arraigned in court as investigators sought custodial orders to allow them to continue their inquiries.
“We are yet to establish a clear motive for the attack. Once investigations are complete, we will be recommending appropriate charges,” Ogola added.
The shocking incident has thrown the university community into grief, with many students expressing disbelief that a minor disagreement could escalate into such a fatal confrontation.
The University of Nairobi is expected to issue a statement as police continue their investigation.
