School transport providers in Kisii have undergone mandatory inspections as part of the ongoing “Operation Watoto Wafike Salama” campaign spearheaded by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA). The initiative, held at Cardinal Otunga High School in Mosocho, aims to ensure that school buses and vans ferrying learners are roadworthy and compliant with safety regulations.
The exercise focused on critical vehicle components that directly affect safety, such as brakes, tires, lights, and seat belts. According to NTSA, vehicles that met the required standards were cleared to continue operations, while those with defects received guidance on necessary repairs before being allowed back on the road.
“The campaign promotes safe transportation for students by verifying the condition of critical vehicle components like brakes, tires, lights, and seat belts,” NTSA stated on its official X handle while confirming the inspection exercise.
The Kisii clinic is part of a nationwide program that will continue with another major inspection event scheduled for Saturday, August 23, 2025, from 9 am to 3 pm at all designated NTSA inspection centres. Participating centres include Mombasa, Nakuru, Uasin Gishu, Nyahururu, Machakos, Voi, Kitale, Kakamega, Nyeri, Thika, Kisumu, Embu, Meru, Kericho, Garissa, and the Likoni Road centre in Nairobi.
NTSA emphasized that these free clinics are designed to enhance learner safety ahead of school reopening. By identifying potential risks early, the program guides schools and transport service providers on corrective measures, ultimately reducing the chances of accidents involving school vehicles.
The authority has urged schools and private operators to take advantage of the free inspections, noting that compliance not only guarantees road safety but also boosts parental confidence in school transport systems.
The move comes just days after NTSA announced the rollout of the free motor vehicle inspection clinics nationwide. With safety at the heart of the campaign, the agency reiterated its commitment to ensuring that every child gets to school and back home safely.
