President William Ruto has honoured his March 2025 pledge to sponsor the education of vulnerable girls from Nairobi County, reaffirming his commitment to inclusive education. On Wednesday, the President hosted beneficiaries, their parents, and teachers from PCEA Booth Girls’ High School for a breakfast meeting at State House, Nairobi.
The initiative supports 170 girls ten from each of Nairobi’s 17 constituencies selected by the Ministry of Education based on need. The comprehensive sponsorship package includes tuition, school uniforms, and shopping items, ensuring the students can fully focus on their education. President Ruto also revealed that he is currently sponsoring over 200 girls at the same institution.
“This initiative targets girls from needy homes who would otherwise struggle to access education. I instructed the Ministry of Education to identify deserving students, and I will personally pay their school fees,” Ruto stated during the event.
To strengthen the school’s capacity, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has deployed additional teachers to PCEA Booth Girls’ High School. Nairobi leaders, including MPs Phelix Odiwuor (Lang’ata), Beatrice Elachi (Dagoretti North), Anthony Oluoch (Mathare), Timothy Wanyonyi (Westlands), and Woman Representative Esther Passaris, were present to witness the occasion.
The President also addressed broader education challenges, announcing the construction of 23,000 new classrooms nationwide to support the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) transition. Nairobi will benefit from 240 of these classrooms, with Ksh 1 billion already allocated and a 90-day completion target set.
In addition, President Ruto pledged to build a new school in Mabatini, Mathare Constituency, to help address educational gaps in the informal settlement.
To streamline support for needy learners, Ruto directed the Ministry of Education to develop a joint scholarship framework with the Council of Governors, ensuring both national and county governments play an active role in financing education.
Lang’ata MP Jalang’o commended the President’s support for vulnerable families, while Dagoretti North MP Beatrice Elachi lauded his grassroots engagement. Mathare MP Anthony Oluoch urged students to make the most of the opportunity.
Calling education “the greatest equaliser,” President Ruto urged unity among leaders and a focus on development over politics.
