At least six people were killed in a tragic road accident involving a lorry and a 14-seater matatu in Mbooni, Makueni County, police confirmed. The incident occurred on Friday, November 21, at Ngoluni Stage in Mbooni East.
According to authorities, the accident happened after a speeding lorry reportedly lost control and crashed into a stationary matatu that was picking up passengers heading to Machakos and Nairobi. Witnesses said the lorry veered off the recently tarmacked road at Ngoluni Junction before colliding with the matatu.
Six people died on the spot, including four Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates returning home after completing their national exams. Several others sustained critical injuries and were rushed to Machakos Level Five Hospital and nearby health facilities.
Mbooni East Sub-County Police Commander Ibrahim Karani said the injured were taken to Makueni Level Five Hospital, while the deceased were moved to the mortuary. Police are currently investigating the circumstances leading to the accident.
Friday’s incident comes amid a spike in road accidents across the country. On the same day, at least 15 people died in separate road crashes. The victims included passengers, riders, pedestrians, and a pedal cyclist. Additionally, 14 people sustained injuries in these accidents.
Recent National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) data show that Kenya recorded 3,890 road fatalities from January to October 2025, up from 3,805 during the same period last year. The fatalities include pedestrians, drivers, pillion passengers, pedal cyclists, and motorcyclists.
Authorities have emphasized the need for road safety campaigns to curb the rising number of accidents. This tragic incident highlights the ongoing dangers on Kenyan roads and underscores the urgent need for stricter traffic enforcement and public awareness.
