The Ministry of Education is set to establish a Creative Arts Talent Academy aimed at identifying and nurturing artistic potential among learners from junior secondary school to university.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba made the announcement during the Kenya National Music Festivals held at Meru School in Meru County. He said the academy will be developed in collaboration with stakeholders and a team of experts to create a comprehensive program aligned with the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
“The talent showcased here, from the youngest learners in junior secondary school to university level, is remarkable. We must harness these talents that often go untapped. Such competitions build learners’ confidence and instill values such as discipline, dedication, association and unity,” Ogamba said.
He underscored the importance of music festivals in promoting teamwork and equipping learners with real-life skills, while also preserving Kenya’s rich cultural diversity. The just-concluded festival saw participation from over 140,000 learners and 9,000 trainers nationwide.
Ogamba further noted that the government will mobilize resources to fund the academy and support similar programs across the country.
Leaders from Meru County welcomed the initiative, citing the festivals’ impact on both education and the economy. Meru Chief of Staff Julius Mbijiwe, representing Governor Isaac Mutuma, lauded the flawless execution of the event and encouraged participants to explore local tourist attractions such as the Elephant Maternity at Nkunga Forest and Lake Igombe.
“The success of this festival is a result of the county government’s collaborative efforts with the national government,” Mbijiwe said.
Equity Bank Meru Branch Manager Nancy Gitonga highlighted the economic boost the festival brought, with the hospitality sector thriving and hotels recording 120 percent booking capacity. She affirmed Equity Bank’s continued support, noting their Sh25 million annual sponsorship and financial literacy training for participants.
Kenya Music Festival Chairman Johnson Ngala commended learners and trainers, emphasizing that the festival fosters nationalism and enhances personal growth.
The proposed Creative Arts Talent Academy is expected to provide a structured pathway for learners to develop and showcase their artistic skills while contributing to Kenya’s cultural and creative industries.
