Text Book Centre (TBC) has launched a transformative initiative dubbed “60 Schools in 60 Days”, marking its 60th anniversary by giving back to under-resourced schools across Kenya. This ambitious campaign aims to bridge the country’s persistent education resource gap by donating essential learning materials to 60 schools in 60 days.
Founded in 1964, TBC has grown from a modest operation in Murang’a and Karatina into Kenya’s leading book retailer, with 14 branches and a thriving e-commerce platform. The campaign is both a celebration of its six decades of service and a reaffirmation of its commitment to advancing learning and literacy.
“As we celebrate six decades of service, we are reminded that education is the foundation of an inclusive, prosperous society,” said TBC CEO Sachin Varma. “Yet millions of Kenyan children still lack access to the tools they need to thrive.”
Despite the government allocating Ksh 666.08 billion to education in the 2023/24 financial year — the largest share among ministries — an estimated 1.8 million Kenyan children still lack basic learning materials. In many public schools, the student-to-textbook ratio is as high as 5:1, making effective learning difficult.
Through this initiative, TBC will donate over 3,000 books, reaching approximately 30,000 learners. The campaign also includes Ksh 1 million worth of art supplies, stationery, and learning tools to support both classroom and extracurricular activities.
According to TBC COO Chetan Rughani, the campaign operates on three pillars: distribution, engagement, and sustainability. By partnering with educators, local schools, and foundations such as the Desai Memorial Foundation, TBC aims to ensure long-term impact.
TBC is inviting the public to get involved by purchasing donation bundles, contributing learning materials, or volunteering at beneficiary schools. “Together, let’s ensure no child is left behind,” Varma urged.
This campaign reflects a broader vision: that businesses and communities working together can help build a more equitable education system and a brighter future for all Kenyan children.
