The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has deregistered 15 teachers over professional misconduct and issued a stern warning to schools against employing them.
In a gazette notice dated September 19, 2025, TSC Chief Executive Officer Eveleen Mitei confirmed that the affected teachers have been struck off the register and are barred from teaching in any public or private institution.
Mitei noted that any school found employing the deregistered teachers risks a fine of not less than Ksh100,000, imprisonment of up to two years for the school head, or both. She added that the decision was made under Section 30 (1) (e) of the Teachers Service Commission Act (Cap. 212), which empowers the Commission to deregister teachers found guilty of professional misconduct.
“The persons whose names are specified in the schedule herein below have been removed from the Register of Teachers pursuant to the provision of section 30 (2) of the Teachers Service Commission Act,” Mitei stated.
She further emphasized that deregistration is permanent unless expressly reviewed by the Commission.
Cases of Misconduct on the Rise
The announcement follows recent disclosures by TSC’s Director of Legal, Labour, and Industrial Relations, Cavin Anyuor, who revealed that since January 2024, the Commission has handled 111 misconduct cases involving teachers.
According to Anyuor, 69 teachers have so far been dismissed and deregistered for offences including inappropriate relations with learners, harassment, and other immoral behaviour. Additionally, nine teachers were dismissed but not deregistered, while 25 were suspended with a chance of reinstatement after serving their suspension.
The Commission also confirmed that one intern teacher was deregistered, four teachers were cleared after investigations, and three cases were closed after the accused passed away before hearings.
Over the past five years, TSC has deregistered 470 teachers for various offences, underscoring its commitment to safeguarding learners and upholding professional standards in schools.
