The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced the opening of applications for 24,000 internship positions in Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) across the country. The recruitment drive, unveiled on Tuesday, is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in line with Kenya’s education reforms.
In its public notice, TSC invited qualified candidates to submit applications exclusively through its online platforms either via the official TSC portal, www.tsc.go.ke under the Careers section, or directly through teachersonline.tsc.go.ke. The application window opened on August 26 and will close at midnight on September 9, 2025.
Successful applicants will be deployed to Junior Secondary Schools within the sub-counties where they attend interviews, or in other schools within their respective counties where vacancies exist. Interns will be expected to handle a range of learning areas under the Junior School curriculum.
To qualify, applicants must be Kenyan citizens, hold at least a Diploma in Education, and be registered teachers with the TSC. Additionally, they must have attained a minimum mean grade of C+ (plus) in KCSE and at least C+ (plus) in two teaching subjects.
Although the programme is not salaried, interns will receive a monthly stipend of Sh20,000, subject to statutory deductions. TSC underscored its commitment to equity in recruitment, encouraging persons with disabilities (PWDs) to apply.
The Commission further cautioned applicants and the public against falling prey to fraudulent schemes. “The recruitment will be strictly based on the official Guidelines for Recruitment of Teacher Interns for the 2025/2026 Financial Year,” the notice read, adding that any suspicious activity should be reported to the nearest TSC office or the commission’s headquarters.
The internship programme is expected to not only provide employment opportunities for young teachers but also bridge staffing gaps in Junior Secondary Schools as the government continues to roll out the CBC.
