The Governor of Nyandarua County, Dr. Kiarie Badilisha, has announced that the first cohort of students at the newly established University of Nyandarua will commence studies in September 2025. The university, which is a constituent college of the University of Nairobi, has already registered 89 students, with more expected to join in the coming weeks.
Speaking during Madaraka Day celebrations at Boiman, Governor Badilisha hailed the launch of the university as a transformative step for the county. He noted that the institution is expected to stimulate the local economy, particularly through increased consumption of agricultural produce such as milk and potatoes. “This university is a game-changer for our county,” he said, emphasizing its role in both education and economic empowerment.
The governor also highlighted progress in education access through the county’s bursary program, which has supported over 100,000 needy students with a total of Sh500 million. However, he expressed concern about the uncertainty surrounding the program’s future due to a legal tussle that has halted its implementation. He warned that many learners risk dropping out if the issue is not resolved swiftly.
In agriculture, Governor Badilisha reported significant advancements in dairy farming. Over 11,000 dairy cows have benefited from a subsidized artificial insemination program, with expectations that the county will soon produce up to 10 million litres of milk annually, earning an estimated Sh500 million.
On sports development, the county aims to establish itself as a sporting hub by renovating eight stadiums to nurture local talent. However, Badilisha lamented delays in project completion caused by slow disbursement of funds from the national government.
Meanwhile, Nyandarua County Commissioner Abdirisack Jaldesa warned residents against engaging in livestock theft, illicit brews, and drug abuse, calling on chiefs and their assistants to enforce vigilance. He also urged the public to report wildlife-related injuries and deaths, noting that the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife has expedited compensation procedures for such incidents.
The Madaraka Day event painted a hopeful picture for Nyandarua, with plans in education, agriculture, and sports poised to elevate the county’s growth trajectory.
