Leaders from the Western region have voiced strong support for the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) and the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF), emphasizing their significance in driving grassroots development. During an empowerment and fundraising event held at Friends Secondary School in Shamakhokho, Vihiga County, these legislators rallied behind the two funds, which they described as lifelines for local development.
Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetang’ula, called for a shift from divisive politics to a focus on development, urging leaders to forge stronger connections with the people they serve. “We must reduce politics and deepen development conversations. If leaders lack a strong connection with the people, their political journeys will be short-lived,” Wetang’ula stated, emphasizing that service to the people should be the foundation of leadership.
The MPs took the opportunity to address misconceptions about NG-CDF, with Dick Maungu (Luanda) clarifying that the fund does not belong to MPs but is managed by a board to benefit the people. “Every shilling is meant to improve lives at the grassroots,” he said. Ernest Kagesi (Vihiga) encouraged residents to actively participate in the upcoming public participation exercise to share their views on the future of NG-CDF.
Fred Ikana (Shinyalu) highlighted the transformative power of both NG-CDF and NGAAF, which have been instrumental in building schools and creating opportunities for the youth. He urged citizens to voice their support for these funds during the public participation process, which is set to begin this Monday.
Beatrice Elachi (Dagoretti North) defended the structure and integrity of the NG-CDF, emphasizing that it is managed by a board, not MPs. She underscored the positive impact the fund has had on communities, noting that without it, many schools would still be in poor condition. Elsie Muhanda praised NGAAF for its support of women and youth, while Kakai Bissau (Kiminini) called for transparency in managing the funds, highlighting their role in providing bursaries and improving education.
As Parliament moves to entrench these funds in the Constitution, Western MPs are united in their commitment to safeguarding the future of NG-CDF and NGAAF, calling on the public to participate in the ongoing discussions and ensure these vital resources continue to benefit communities across Kenya.
