Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula has hailed President William Ruto’s administration for what he described as the most ambitious and transformative effort in Kenya’s education sector since independence.
Speaking during a Family Day service at Mutuati Catholic Church in Meru County, Wetangula pointed to the recruitment of 76,000 teachers since Ruto assumed office, with plans to hire an additional 24,000 under the current budget. “This is the most ambitious teacher recruitment drive since independence,” he said. “In just about three years, 100,000 teachers will have been employed an unprecedented move in our history.”
The Speaker said the initiative demonstrates the administration’s commitment to quality education, improved learning outcomes, and a reduced teacher-to-student ratio. “This is a game-changer for our schools and a solid foundation for future generations,” he stated.
Wetang’ula urged Meru residents to back President Ruto’s re-election in 2027, citing the teacher hiring effort as a clear fulfilment of campaign promises. “You should support him because he is delivering. He deserves two terms,” he told the congregation.
Joined by Meru Governor Isaac Mutuma, MPs Julius Taitumu (Igembe North) and John Mutunga (Tigania West), among others, Wetang’ula called on the youth to register as voters early, urging them to acquire national IDs through the newly constituted Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
The Speaker also condemned violent demonstrations, saying they derail development and worsen unemployment. “We must equip our children with skills, not encourage violence,” he said, stressing that peace and civility are essential in leadership.
On local issues, Wetang’ula promised government action to curb insecurity in cattle-rustling areas of Igembe, noting that discussions are planned with the President for a lasting solution. He also pledged support to streamline the miraa trade, recognizing its economic value to the region.
Wetang’ula concluded by praising MP Julius Taitumu for his leadership, describing Tigania East as a peaceful and hardworking constituency. “In life, there is no way to peace peace is the way,” he said.
