The family of the late teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang is in mourning and demanding answers following his tragic death. The 31-year-old father died on June 8 from blunt force trauma to the head and other injuries sustained during what is believed to have been a brutal assault. As the investigation unfolds, his wife, Nevnina Onyango, has spoken out emotionally, offering a glimpse into their last moments together and calling for justice.
A nursing student and mother to their young child, Nevnina opened up about their final conversation, which now haunts her deeply. She shared that her husband was filled with fear after his arrest and had reached out to her, questioning whether he was truly safe in the custody of those meant to protect him. His voice, filled with uncertainty and concern, remains etched in her memory.
“He was asking if he was safe,” she recalled. “He wasn’t sure if he would be okay in police custody. I want everyone to feel safe when arrested, because the police are meant to protect us—not harm us.”
Ojwang had been arrested on the afternoon of Saturday, June 7, while having lunch with his family in Kakoth, Kasipul Kabondo, Homa Bay County. Just two months prior, the couple had officially tied the knot, sealing their bond after years of companionship. His untimely death has left a painful void not only in his family but also in the hearts of many Kenyans who admired his work and activism.
Needing answers and accountability, Nevnina has spent the past week in Nairobi seeking justice for her husband. Her plea is simple but powerful: she wants those responsible for his death held accountable. Her voice, though filled with grief, remains resolute as she speaks for her son, for herself, and for every family that might face a similar tragedy if justice is not served.
“It is heartbreaking to lose someone this way,” she said tearfully. “I just pray that people come out and help us fight for justice. We know we can’t bring him back, but justice will give us some peace. I’m asking fellow Kenyans—please, stand with us. Help us get justice for Albert.”
On Father’s Day, Nevnina shared a heartfelt tribute to her late husband, posting screenshots of a past WhatsApp conversation between them. In the messages, Albert expressed pride in being a father and the joy he felt being surrounded by his family. She, in turn, praised him for being a loving husband and a respectful son-in-law. Her message revealed the strength of their bond and the pain of losing him so soon after beginning their life together as a married couple.
“I promise our son will never forget you,” she wrote. “You were everything to us.”
As the investigation into Ojwang’s death continues, three more suspects have been arrested, and part of a previously destroyed CCTV recording has been recovered. Public outrage continues to grow, with many Kenyans demanding accountability from law enforcement and expressing solidarity with Ojwang’s family.
The case has sparked wider conversations about police brutality, accountability, and the treatment of suspects in custody. For Nevnina, this is not just a fight for justice—it is a mission to ensure that no other family endures the same nightmare.
