Renowned Kenyan gospel singer Amani has hinted at stepping back from music to focus on mentorship, wellness advocacy, and faith-based initiatives. Speaking to She Glows Africa, Amani reflected on her journey in the entertainment industry and the factors influencing her evolving career path.
Amani, known for hits like Missing My Baby and Bad Boy, has been a force in the African music scene for years. However, she now finds herself drawn to a different calling. She acknowledged that while music will always be part of her life, her faith has led her to a more purposeful path—mentorship. “I’ll always sing, dance, and perform,” she said. “However, my faith has led me to live more purposefully, which is why I’ve shifted toward mentorship. So far, it has been a wonderful journey and has inspired me in many ways.”
Her recent work with RIG East Africa and The Safe Summit highlights this shift, as she dedicates herself to wellness advocacy and faith-driven initiatives. Balancing these responsibilities with the demands of a music career has led her to reassess her priorities.
Throughout her career, Amani has won multiple awards and accolades. However, she recognizes the industry’s tendency to prioritize commercial success over artistic authenticity. She credits her longevity to staying true to her purpose. “As an artist, it’s important to understand your ‘why’—why are you creating that EP or album? If you want commercial success, you need to approach music as a business while staying true to yourself,” she explained.
One of Amani’s most notable career moments was her involvement in The One 8 Project, a collaboration with R. Kelly and other top African artists. Reflecting on the experience, she acknowledged its impact on her career while addressing the controversy surrounding R. Kelly, who is serving a 30-year prison sentence for serious crimes. “At the time, I didn’t know much about R. Kelly’s controversial side,” she admitted. “However, with the recent findings, his arrest, and incarceration, I don’t approve of his actions. This experience has taught me to be more cautious because things like this become part of your history.”
As Amani transitions into a new phase of her life, her journey stands as a testament to following one’s purpose, even when it means stepping away from a long-standing passion.
