The Harambee Stars are brimming with confidence ahead of their crucial African Nations Championship (CHAN) Group A fixture against Angola tonight at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. The match kicks off at 7 pm, with both teams seeking to solidify their chances of advancing to the next round.
The Stars, who triumphed 1-0 over DR Congo in their opening game, received a major morale boost after President William Ruto rewarded each player with Ksh 1 million. This gesture has lifted spirits in the camp as they prepare to face an aggressive Angolan side.
Head coach Benni McCarthy is unfazed by Angola’s high-pressing game, stating that his focus is firmly on results.
“We will play our game; we have reviewed their style of play, we know their strengths, and we know how to approach them. I am focused on results, not possession or a beautiful game,” said McCarthy confidently.
Team captain Aboud Omar echoed his coach’s sentiments, assuring Kenyans that the Stars are ready for battle. He urged fans to come out in large numbers, emphasizing the pivotal role they played during the DR Congo match.
“We are grateful to our fans who played a key role in our first match, and we appeal to them to come out in numbers as we play Angola,” Omar said.
Goalkeeper Bryne Omondi, who impressed in the previous match, promised to give his all once again, while calling on more stakeholders to support the team financially to keep morale high.
“I will give my best again against Angola. I know they will come all out, but so will we. Another win would ease pressure in our remaining games,” Omondi noted.
On the other hand, Angola’s coach Pedro Gonsalves acknowledged Kenya’s strength but insisted his side is desperate for a win after their 2-0 loss to Morocco.
“We learnt from our mistakes, and while Kenya are strong at home, we have no option but to win,” Gonsalves said.
Kenya and Morocco both have 3 points, but the North Africans lead Group A on goal difference. In the other group match, DR Congo will face Zambia at 4 pm at Nyayo Stadium.
