President William Ruto has thrown his full weight behind Harambee Stars with a lucrative incentive ahead of their final Group A fixture against Zambia in the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024.
Speaking after meeting the national team on Monday, fresh from their sensational 1-0 victory over Morocco, Ruto pledged Sh2.5 million to each player and technical bench member if they defeat Zambia on Sunday, August 17.
“Sunday, I want us to have a new deal. God willing, we are winning. If we win, each person will get Sh2.5 million, including the technical bench,” the president assured the squad, adding that further rewards await should they progress deeper into the tournament.
For the quarterfinals, Ruto promised Sh1 million for each player plus a house under the affordable housing programme a request reportedly made by the team.
The pledge comes after Harambee Stars delivered a statement performance at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, ending Morocco’s unbeaten CHAN record. Ryan Ogam netted the decisive goal in the 42nd minute, steering home a composed finish that sent the home fans into delirium.
The Stars were forced to dig deep in the second half after Chrispine Erambo’s red card upgraded by VAR left them with 10 men. Goalkeeper Bryne Omondi produced several crucial saves to preserve the slender lead, ensuring Kenya’s first-ever victory over the two-time champions in this tournament.
The win, following a 1–0 triumph over DR Congo and a 1–1 draw with Angola, propelled Kenya to seven points from three matches, securing a historic quarter-final berth on their CHAN debut. The final group clash against Zambia now carries added motivation not just for pride and momentum, but also the substantial financial windfall promised by the Head of State.
Ruto’s visit and pledges underscore the growing support for the national team and Kenyan football at large. The president’s confidence mirrors the belief of thousands of fans who have rallied behind Benni McCarthy’s side, whose spirited performances have ignited hopes of a deep tournament run.
For Harambee Stars, Sunday’s duel against Zambia offers a chance to cement their place as genuine contenders—and perhaps take home not just glory, but life-changing rewards.
