Kenyan singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Benson Mutua, known professionally as Bensoul, is set to take the hot seat at the upcoming Roast House Comedy event scheduled for May 31, 2025. The event, which will take place in the Red Room at Adlife Plaza in Nairobi, is part of a growing trend of comedic roasts where the guest of honor is humorously mocked and teased by friends and comedians in a lighthearted, exaggerated manner. The roast is meant to entertain rather than offend, and Bensoul is expected to handle the playful jabs with grace and humor.
This event will add Bensoul to a list of notable personalities who have undergone the comedic roast. Previous roastees have included well-known figures like social media sensation Andrew Kibe, actress Sandra Dacha, and media personality Shaffie Weru. Each of them endured a series of comedic barbs, with Sandra Dacha notably holding her own by responding to the teasing in kind. The Roast House Comedy event continues to gain popularity, drawing attention for its blend of humor and the courage of the celebrities who agree to be roasted.
Bensoul’s musical journey has been marked by significant milestones. He first rose to prominence in 2019 as the first artist signed to Sol Generation Records, a label founded by the award-winning band Sauti Sol. His debut single, “Lucy,” quickly made him a standout talent in Kenya’s music scene. After a successful five-year contract with Sol Generation, Bensoul ventured out on his own, establishing his own record label, Lion of Sudah, in 2023.
Growing up in a musical family, Bensoul was influenced by his father, a musician who played bass and electric guitar. Although he initially pursued a degree in civil engineering at the Technical University of Kenya, Bensoul decided to follow his passion for music and dropped out in his third year. In 2016, he joined the Kenyan band H_art the Band as a guitarist, which marked the beginning of his journey into the music industry. During this time, he contributed to several popular tracks, including “Uliza Kiatu” and “El Shaddai.”
Bensoul’s songwriting talent has also extended beyond Kenya. He penned the song “Time Flies” for Burna Boy’s album African Giant, which went on to win a Grammy Award. This achievement earned Bensoul and Sauti Sol recognition as Grammy Award-winning artists.
As Bensoul takes the stage for his roast, his musical achievements and his resilience in the face of public scrutiny will undoubtedly be topics of discussion. His journey from a civil engineering student to a celebrated musician who has earned international acclaim shows his commitment to following his dreams, and his ability to handle the humor that comes with being the center of attention will be put to the test at this highly anticipated event.
